phosphodae: Deb McNish: [ecstudents-spring2008] Important Announcement

The Earlham College community was saddened to
learn this afternoon of the death of 20-year-old
second-year student Kai Woods of Atlanta,
Georgia. Her body was found in her residence hall
room. Her parents have been notified.

Dean of Student Development Deb McNish confirmed
the unfortunate occurrence today. McNish said
that the College’s Student Development staff is
cooperating fully with the police inquiry into
the death, which is standard procedure in the
event of any death on campus. According to
Richmond Police Department Sgt. Brad Berner, no foul play is suspected.

Student Development staff will be available to
students for counseling and support in the
residence halls and in the Student Development
Office until 10:00 p.m. this evening.

Additionally, the Student Development Office in
Carpenter Hall, Stout Meetinghouse and Campus
Ministries in Virginia Cottage will be available
to students from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 14, 2008.

The Earlham community also may gather between
noon and 1:00 p.m. in Stout Meetinghouse for silent reflection on Friday.

There's a story up on the Word's website at http://word.cs.earlham.edu/node/327. A follow-up will be written in greater detail before the paper's next circulation.

The site's up, but the database is incredibly unstable. Hits to the site should work now.

Also, although it's unlikely that a formal correction will run (given the breaking news nature of that article), a segment about unconfirmed reports of Housekeeping staff finding the body has been rescinded by the Word's managing editor, who has confirmed for the Word that this statement is untrue.

More details will come out in the Word's true, non-breaking news article, which will be out in print on the 28th. Until then, the online article is likely to remain up as-is.

Will do my best, but I won't know everything; I'm counting on others to respectfully contribute what they know.

um, so, i guess as far as respectfully contributing what i know, for those of you that aren't on campus right now:
kai committed suicide today in her dorm room. i heard from multiple people that she was found by an RA, though i do not know this for a fact. someone was sent to look for her this afternoon after she missed a class that she had a presentation in.
from what res life has been telling us, the college was aware that she had been having issues, and had done everything in their power to help her. they can't tell us a lot, but my friend who is an ra said that he really believed that the college had done everything they could.
kai was an amazingly talented singer and very active in her local church community.
